Now we don’t sit down for dinner as a family every night. There is scouts, youth group…distractions. You get the picture. Though we don’t slip in the sit down family dinner everyday, I believe conversations at the dinner tables will create a more connected family. I’m sure there are articles and studies somewhere about it. I just know if from experience how it makes us feel.
This past summer I had my nieces and nephews stay with me. One the most memorable things we did when they came was to go around the table with conversation starter questions. At first…a little grumbling but just after the first round we were all having so much fun taking turns sharing our wonderful ideas.
There are resources out there (we used cards from an American Girl cookbook) to help you. To get you started try these out at your family dinner tonight.
1. If you could make your own flavor ice cream what would it be? What would you name it?
2. If you could invite a famous person to dinner, who would that be? What question would you want to ask them?
3. If you could eat just one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
We were laughing and sharing and well…just being a family. It really boils down to the most important thing–spending time together. It turned into such a success with my nieces and nephews … we had to do it one more time before they left to go home.
I know it will create more family connections tonight too. Try it!
